Shame and Honor
"Honor is the greatest of all goods." - Aristotle
"By nature we yearn and hunger for honor, and once we have glimpsed, as it were, some part of its radiance, there is nothing we are not prepared to bear and suffer in order to secure it." - Cicero
"What is more sacred than honor?" - Dio Chrysotom
"A man without honor is worse than dead." - Cervantes, Don Quixote
In ancient cultures honor was the highest aspiration, and shame was the greatest tragedy. Honor and shame are also central themes in the Bible. In much of the world today, honor and shame continue to be central driving forces in human relationships and behavior. But in America, guilt is a far more powerful motivator than shame. As a result, we tend to have a blind spot in how we understand and apply the Bible to our lives in the area of shame and honor, and we also struggle to communicate the good news of Jesus Christ to those who come from honor/shame cultures in a way that resonates with them. Explore the honor/shame worldview and the powerful Bible message that addresses this neglected area of our lives.
